Abingdon Wine Estate is a boutique family cellar based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands that offers unique wines from a previously untouched region.
The varieties planted are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo. The farm was purchased by Ian and Jane Smorthwaite in 2000 and the vines planted in 2004. In 2007, Abingdon Wine Estate made history by producing the first certified Estate wine in KwaZulu Natal with a over 100 certified wines to date. Abingdon Wines reflect the unique terroir and climate in which they are grown. The altitude and cooler climate gives the wines a distinct Old World style showing crisp natural acidity, delicate cool fruit flavours and moderate alcohol levels.
Every bottle is an estate wine with 100% of the grapes grown on the farm. They are hand-picked and pressed in the traditional method of a wooden basket press. From there they are aged in stainless steel and French oak barrels where they will later be hand bottled and hand labelled.
The Abingdon Wine Bar is small and intimate, catering to a maximum of 60 guests. Sit outside under the oak trees overlooking the vines with your glass of wine and soak up the summer sunshine whilst enjoying one of our gourmet harvest boards. On chillier winter days, relax around the outdoor fire pits or cosy up next to one of our three roaring fire places inside.
The menu is small and fresh, offering harvest boards and tapas style dishes.
We are open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Public holidays. Booking essential, call Jane on 083 463 8503.
Tastings are run throughout the day between 10 am-4 pm. Join the family team, Ian, Jane and Laurie at the tasting bar for a personalised introduction to our wines. Tastings are charged per glass (R15 - R25). Booking is not necessary for tastings, but please note the tasting bar can get very busy, particularly if you are wanting a harvest board to accompany your tasting, so it is always good to call ahead.
